African Visiting Scholars 2020
The general requirements, eligibilities and instructions are outlined below.

Applications will open on January 6, 2020. The deadline for all application materials, including endorsement letters, is February 3, 2020 at 11:59pm CST. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide their proposal to their sponsor with sufficient time to write and submit an endorsement letter. Sponsors should be sure to consult the requirements below for endorsing candidates before submitting their letters of reference.

The research visit must begin during calendar year 2020, no earlier than April, but research can extend into 2021.

Requirements, eligibilities and instructions
Visiting Scholarships for African Scholars provide opportunities for African scientists who wish to use the Field Museum's collections. The Science and Scholarship Funding Committee judge applications based on the project’s feasibility and relevance to the Museum’s collections and research. At the same time, applicants must communicate their projects’ importance and potential impact in a manner that is compelling to a broader audience, i.e. beyond specialists in the relevant field. The project description should spark excitement for, and curiosity about, the work.

A Field Museum sponsor must endorse the application. Applicants should review the scientists eligible to sponsor visiting fellows on the list of sponsors and contact potential sponsors to communicate background, goals and objectives. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide their proposal to sponsors allowing them sufficient time to write and submit endorsement letters. Applications submitted without this endorsement are incomplete.

Proposed budgets should estimate costs for airfare, plus estimated weekly costs for accommodation, meals and ground transportation if applicable. Before preparing a budget, applicants should consult their Field Museum sponsor for guidance on costs.

Ideally, every applicant should submit through this portal: https://forms.gle/s4qMBzpRBhQ4fNw9A. If technical issues arise, e-mail scholarship@fieldmuseum.org and we will provide instructions for manual application.

The proposal should include:
1) A project description detailing the research, its purpose, significance, and relevance to the Field Museum’s collections; collaboration(s) with Field Museum curators and other Museum sponsors; and procedures and methods used in the project. The description must be no longer than two pages, double-spaced, 12-point font with one-inch margins.
2) A detailed budget outlining relevant expenses.  J-1 visa fees currently run $380 (SEVIS fee plus visa processing).
3) CV (in English) with names and contact information of two references other than Field Museum sponsor.
4) One letter of reference from a non-Field Museum recommender, sent by the recommender before the deadline to scholarship@fieldmuseum.org.
5) A support letter from at least one Field Museum sponsor, sent by the sponsor before the deadline to scholarship@fieldmuseum.org.
